The Hampton Roads Workforce Council and Elizabeth River Crossings recently launched the Connecting Opportunities program — an innovative program that will connect local community members to higher paying, more stable opportunities through skilled trade education. Through the new program, 30 students per year will receive funding to complete trade programs through Tidewater Community College’s Skilled Trades Academy.

Participants will receive trainings and employment assistance for in-demand construction and maritime trades such as welding, roofing, pipelaying, electrical, framing, coating, National Center for Construction Education Research (NCCER) Core, and more. After the trainings are completed, participants will receive assistance with job placement within the maritime and construction industry.

The program is open to Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Portsmouth residents:

  • Adults who are members of the ALICE (Asset, Limited, Income Constrained, Employed) community
  • Young adults (ages 18-24) who are members of the emerging workforce
  • Veterans and transitioning service members (at least one-third of all spots are reserved for this group)
